Townwest Sertoma Club 2010 Sertoman
of the Year
Roy Heim
6303 S 30 W Ave
Tulsa, Oklahoma 74132
Roy Heim has been a vital part of Townwest Sertoma
Club since joining in 1987. He received his Good
Enthusiastic Member (GEM) award in 1988. He
received the Centurian Award 1989 and an Oustanding
Achievement Award. He was selected as Sertoman of
the Year in 1991. He served the club as President
in 1990-1991 and as The Law Enforcement Awards
Banquet Committee Chairman and Master of Ceremonies
from 1988 until present. He was selected as
District Sertoman of the Year in 1991-1992. He
received his Sertoma Life Membership in 1991.
During a time of absence from the club in 2001-2002,
he also received the Service to Mankind Award.
Roy was born in
New Orleans, Louisiana, and moved to Tulsa with
family when he was 4 years old. He grew up on the
“Sand Springs Line” and attended Tulsa Public
Schools, graduating from Central High School in May
1965.
Roy joined the
Air Force just after graduation where he was trained
as a Load Master for the C-130 aircraft. He served
18 months in Viet Nam flying cargo, troops and
explosives around the war zone. He received the
USAF Distinguished Flying Cross, USAF Air Medal with
4 clusters, Good Conduct Medal, Expeditionary Medal,
National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service
Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Expert Marksman
Award, and Combat Crew Wings.
After serving
his country, Roy returned to Tulsa and joined the
Tulsa Police Department graduating in June 1970 from
the academy. He was a member of the Tulsa’s first
Special Operations Team (SWAT). He attended Tulsa
Junior College, graduating in 1975 with Associates
Degree in Police Science. He retired from Tulsa
Police in 2003 and working as a civilian eventually
retiring from the city in 2008.
While working at
Tulsa Police Department, Roy received the Tulsa
Police Medal of Honor, Life Saving Medal, and
Department Commendation Medal. He had many
accomplishments in his 30 years with the department
because he always tried to do things better, more
effectively and efficiently, and less expensively.
Roy was known as “the cheap detective” because of
the innovative ways he could accomplish a task
without spending much money in specialized
equipment.
In 1989, after
leaving a Townwest Sertoma meeting at Ollie’s for
work one rainy morning, Roy found a car overturned
in a ditch at the expressway entrance. He stopped
to help another man pull the woman out of the car,
saving her from drowning. He received several
awards for his heroism including an Oklahoma State
Senate Citation.
In 1993 Roy was
selected to train with FEMA as a trainer for the
Mass Fatality Incident Response Course along with
several other Oklahomans. The training team spent
the next couple of years conducting training courses
throughout the state until the 1995 bombing of the
Alfred Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
Roy received many accolades for his role working
with the Oklahoma State ME’s Office. He continued
to teach and to work with the National Disaster
Mortuary Response team on plane crashes, floods,
tornadoes, and eventually the 9-11 disaster at the
World Trade Center in New York.
Roy has been a
member of the Oklahoma Division of International
Asso. For Identification since 1987, in 1993 he
joined the IAI and the International Association of
Blood Pattern Analysts. In 1992 he was a charter
member of the Association for Crime Scene
Reconstruction (ACSR) and served as its President in
2001. In 1998, Roy received the ASCR Distinguished
Member Award, one of only three given since its
inception. He was recognized in 1999 by Law and
Order Magazine for establishing the first volunteer
homicide squad “The Gray Squad”.
Before his
retirement from the Tulsa Police Department, Roy
earned his bachelor’s degree in 2002 from Langston
University with a degree in Liberal Studies. He was
recognized as “most outstanding student” along with
his wife, Sherry. In 2004 they graduated from
University of Oklahoma with master’s degree in Urban
Studies.
Roy served the
Southwest Tulsa community as Tulsa District 8
Planning Chair for 4 years. In 1990, when we
changed our form of government, Roy served on the
City Charter Transition Committee for training the
new City Council. As result of his research, he
wrote the recommendation for implementation of the
Mayor’s Action Center.
Roy joined the
Southwest Tulsa Chamber of Commerce in 1991. In
July 1992, Roy founded the Southwest Tulsa
Historical Society along with about 16 other people
and was elected President. He has been re-elected
to that position 17 times since then.
Roy has served
his community on the Southwest Tulsa Planning Team,
on Mayor Bill LaFortune’s “Vision Summit Steering
Committee” in 2002, and was appointed to serve on
the Mayor’s Refuse and Recycle Task Force in 2009.
In 2003 he
joined a group of train enthusiasts to keep the City
of Tulsa from selling its historic Frisco 4500 steam
engine as “Save the Old Frisco 4500” committee. He
suggested that the Townwest Sertoma Club take on the
project of restoring the old engine and bring it to
Southwest Tulsa for display. In 2009 Roy was
appointed as Route 66 Village Site Manager,
Roy has chaired
the Sertoma Law Enforcement Awards committee since
it was started in 1988. He has acted as the Master
of Ceremonies for each banquet; recruited the
banquet speaker; gathered the nominations and
presented them to the club for voting; coordinated
the list of attendees and worked with caterer on
meal set up; and for the first several years he
designed the banquet program.
Roy serves the
club as “unofficial photographer.” He also
developed and has maintained the club website for
several years. He has worked on compiling the club
history through old records. Roy served as the 2009
Oklahoma Fall District Conference Host Club
Chairperson.
He is currently
working on a project with the Berryhill Serteen club
to take photos of all the headstones in Clinton Oaks
Cemetery. These will someday be available on-line
for genealogists and family members to see.

Susan Reynolds has been with the Townwest
Sertoma Club since October of 1994. She has two
sons, Brett and Ben. Brett attended the
Oklahoma Christian University and Ben attended
the University of Central Oklahoma. Susan is
married to Townwest Sertoma Club member Ron
Reynolds. They make a dynamic team that often
take on projects together.
Susan has been teaching school
since 1981. She has been teaching science
classes at Berryhill secondary schools since
1983. She is a very dedicated teacher who goes
the extra mile for her students.
Extracurricular school activities are among her
favorite interests. She can be spotted at just
about every ball game and concert that takes
place at Berryhill. Susan likes to travel,
attend plays and concerts.
Susan has been a Townwest Sertoma
Club member since October of 1994. Her presence
has been very much felt throughout Townwest
Sertoma. Her attendance at weekly meetings is
exemplary. She was a faithful bingo worker when
Townwest was working bingo as a fundraiser and
sometimes even showed up to help when she was
not scheduled.
She has been a sponsor, or
co-sponsor of the Berryhill SERTEEN Club for
many years, coordinating with other teachers and
club members. The club has exceeded many
expectations through the years thanks to Susan
and the others involved in guiding students.
They have been recognized by Sertoma
International for their Big Brother and Sister
Program that pairs secondary students with
others in the elementary school.
Susan has represented Townwest
Sertoma on the Sertoma Hearing Aid Recycling
Board (SHARP) since October of 1997. She
faithfully attends meetings, works on the
programs and reports to the club the needs and
activities of the SHARP Board.
She represents the club on the
Happy Hands annual drives for sponsors and needs
in an effort that raises both funds and supplies
for children with hearing disabilities. Susan
is a club representative on the Tulsa Speech and
Hearing's annual Super Sunday Dinner and
Auction. Whenever there is a need in the
community you will probably find Susan there
helping to solve it. She is well-known for
getting the job done in many things, including
the Sertoma projects. Susan has been a very
pleasant addition to the Townwest family and has
been a great club worker.

Mike
Massey |
 |
Mike Massey's heart is almost as big as his
imposing frame. He is a true friend of
those he meets and is always ready to take the
lead in any project that comes along. His
first love, well, maybe not the first, is
restoring the Frisco 4500 Steam Engine and
companion cars. Mike joined the Sertoma
Club during a drive by the club to support the
restoration of the steam engine for Tulsa.
He found that club members were involved not
only in the engine, but many other community
projects. This was a good fit for a man
who stood up for getting things done, instead of
talking about doing something. His
enthusiasm for club projects ranks at the top of
the list. If the club is doing something
constructive, he is there.

Sue Massey |

|
Sue Massey has been a member of the Townwest
Sertoma Club since November of 2004. In
that three year span she has been an integral
part of the successful endeavors of the the
club. She she joined the Sertoma family,
she admitted that she had never been much of a
"joiner" but that she felt a special attraction
to Townwest, mainly through the club
sponsorships. Once inducted, she wasted no
time in shedding the "never been much of a
joiner" cloak as she jumped feet first into
nearly every aspect of the club operation.
As a long time resident, she has consistently
supported community projects in this history
rich part of the Tulsa area. Her seventeen
years of employment at the Expo Square on the
Tulsa Fairgrounds put her in close proximity to
many huge events germane to the success of the
City of Tulsa. She brought those
experiences to Townwest and has generously
shared her expertise in furthering the Sertoma
cause. Her organizational skills are
exceptional and are evident in every project she
embraces. In three years she has served as
a member on the Board of Directors, was
Vice-President of Programs, and President Elect.
She has served on numerous ad hoc committees.
She is the Chairperson of the club's yearly yard
sale, one of the two primary annual fund-raisers
sponsored by Townwest. Since she has held
that position the amount of funds raised through
that event has quadrupled.
Our Sertoman of the Year participates in every
club activity. She is quick to step up to
volunteer to serve. Her attendance at
weekly meetings is outstanding, and her
participation in club socials is exemplary.
Outside of Sertoma she enjoys family time,
especially with her husband Ed and canine child,
Abby. Her commitment to family, church and
community is testimony for her concern for
others. Our Sertoman of the Year has a
particular fondness for the morning newspaper.
It has been rumored that no one, save no one,
messes with her paper before she has the
opportunity to read it. In fact, the last
person to ruffle the morning paper before she
had the opportunity to read it, was last seen on
a rail headed out of town! Our Sertoman
exhibits a positive attitude to go along with
her pleasant demeanor. She has a great
sense of humor and isn't afraid to share it with
others.

Darla Hall |
 |
Darla Covey Hall joined the
Townwest Sertoma Club in 1989 about the time she
was running for the first City of Tulsa Council
seat for District 2. She was elected to
the City Council and continued to attend
meetings. She was prompt in meeting
attendance and carried on with her independent
insurance business and city council work while
being very involved in the Sertoma activities.
Darla is always the first of the group to raise
her hand and volunteer for Sertoma projects.

2005 |
Maggie Shiroma |
 |
Maggie Shiroma was selected as
the Townwest Sertoman of the Year for her

Gene Griffith |

Townwest chapter honors Griffith
Sertoma's main man 031704
Gene Griffith, a mentor with the Big Brothers
and Sisters of Green Country, shows photos of
one of his classic cars to Kenneth. Griffith, a
longtime west Tulsa businessman, was recently
honored for his community service by Townwest
Sertoma. DAVID SCHULTE / Tulsa World
Gene Griffith, a longtime west
Tulsa businessman, calls himself a "joiner" for
belonging to more than a dozen civic
organizations. However,
it would probably be more accurate to say
Griffith is a giver. Throughout his life,
Griffith, 75, has given himself to his community
so it could be a better place to live. Townwest
Sertoma recently named Griffith its top Sertoman
for 2003-04, qualifying him for the district
award April 10 at Forest Ridge Country Club in
Broken Arrow. Sertoma supports programs for
people who have speech, hearing and language
disorders. The organization also sponsors
projects that promote freedom and democracy,
assist young people, and benefit a variety of
community needs.
Griffith is an active Sertoman
and has supported the organization's many
sponsorships, including its main fund-raiser, a
hearing-aid program for the elderly and
children, said Randy McGoffin, secretary and
treasurer of Townwest Sertoma. "He's a great
guy," McGoffin said. "He's a real asset. Gene is
the consummate Sertoman. He is very active, not
only in Townwest, but in the community."
McGoffin praised Griffith for promoting the
organization's annual Law Enforcement Banquet
that honors area law enforcement officers.
Proceeds from the banquet are used to buy
hearing aids.
Griffith has consistently sold
the most advertisements, among members, for the
Sertoma publication that provides a biography
for each police officer, McGoffin said. To
Griffith, the banquet recognizes an
underappreciated group of people. "We don't give
the people enough credit who put their lives on
the line for us, especially right now," he said.
"And, they really appreciate it. It's something
that they really feel good about and somebody
needs to do something besides fuss about them."
Griffith, who owns American Auto
Group, 601 E. Main St., Jenks, and American
Limousine Service, 4424 S. 33rd West Ave.,
established himself in the west side community
when he co-founded Heath-Griffith Funeral Home
in 1972. Griffith sold the business in 1992. He
recently became a mentor for the Big Brothers
and Sisters of Green Country, 3015 E. Skelly
Drive. For the past six months, Griffith has
been a big brother to a 10-year-old boy,
Kenneth, who lives with his mother at the
Charles Page Family Village. Bonnie Daniel, case
manager at Big Brothers and Sisters, said
although Griffith is one of the organization's
oldest brothers, he is a good mentor to Kenneth,
whose father died about four years ago in an
automobile accident. Because the two share an
interest in classic cars and hunting, Griffith
and Kenneth are a good match, Daniel said. "He's
like a grandfather figure," she said. "He has
grandchildren that were about the same age, so
he could bond together well."
At least once a week, Griffith
and Kenneth have a night out. The two frequently
go out to eat or bowling. "It thrills me to see
how it thrills him to buy whatever he wants to
eat," Griffith said. To Griffith, serving as a
big brother is his way of giving back to those
who influenced his life when he was growing up,
he said.
